At Black Lab Drafting, we believe good home design begins with listening. We specialize in residential architectural design and drafting for new home construction, working closely with homeowners, builders, and other professionals to turn ideas into thoughtful, functional plans that are ready to move toward construction.
Black Lab Drafting is led by owner and lead designer Rich, who brings more than 20 years of experience in design and CAD drafting to every project. His experience spans a wide range of projects, including hospitals, industrial complexes, drive-thru coffee shops, and residential homes. Working across such diverse projects has given Rich a broad understanding of design, planning, drafting, and the practical considerations that go into bringing a project from an idea to a finished space.
What sets Rich apart is his combination of technical experience, creativity, and attention to detail. He enjoys working directly with clients to understand not only what they want their home to look like, but how they want it to function and how it needs to work for the way they live. Every project is approached with the goal of creating a design that balances the client's vision, property, priorities, and budget.
Outside of drafting and design, Rich has a passion for woodworking and hands-on craftsmanship. That appreciation for how things are designed, built, and finished carries into his approach to residential design and helps keep the focus on creating plans that are both creative and practical.
And then there’s Drake—the black Lab who inspired the Black Lab Drafting name. A loyal companion to Rich and his family for more than nine years, Drake has been part of the story from the beginning and remains a special reminder of the personal values behind the business: loyalty, trust, craftsmanship, and relationships that last.

Rich is the Owner and Lead Designer at Black Lab Drafting, bringing more than 20 years of experience in residential design and CAD drafting to every project. With a passion for design and a strong understanding of the technical side of drafting, Rich works closely with homeowners, builders, and other professionals to turn ideas into thoughtful, functional home designs. He believes good design is about more than how a home looks—it’s about creating spaces that work for the people who live in them.
Rich approaches each project with careful attention to detail, practical problem-solving, and a commitment to understanding each client’s goals. From the first ideas to the development of detailed plans, he takes pride in creating designs that balance creativity, functionality, and buildability. His experience, personal approach, and dedication to quality are at the heart of Black Lab Drafting and the work he does for every client.

Meet our administrator
Lisa
Lisa serves as the Administrative and Marketing Coordinator for Black Lab Drafting, supporting daily operations through website management, social media coordination, marketing, and administrative organization. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Missouri State University and brings a background in business administration, student life administration, and event coordination. Her experience has developed strong communication, scheduling, organizational, and relationship-building skills that support both the team and its clients.
Lisa is passionate about growing within the residential design industry and is actively expanding her knowledge of drafting and design to further support project development and the client experience. Her attention to detail, creativity, and dependable approach make her an integral part of advancing the Black Lab Drafting brand and building strong client relationships.
